Wagon Wheel

A few weeks ago I took about 50 of my old clothing items to the local Plato’s Closet. They offered me $72 for only 18 of those 50 items. You do the math, that’s averaging $4 an item. Realistically, it was $.80 an item but the two pair of premium jeans they wanted were “worth” a whopping $14, skewing the average. I recommend only using Plato's if you are about to throw away your clothing because there are more profitable ways to make money on pre-loved goods!

There's more to the story. The brown jacket you are about to see was one of the items they rejected! No joke.
Nonetheless, I decided to spend some time with my old clothing and find new ways to wear these “rejects”!
Here’s how the look turned out...

Jacket: F21 || Navy Gingham: J. Crew ||  Sequin Top: Limited || Denim: 7FAM || Bag: Speedy 35 || Shoes: Dillards (sale: only $38.14!) || Sunnies: Burberry Cat Eye

  1. totally agree with you about plato's closet. such a rip off! but at least it gave you an excuse to reinvent what you already have!

  2. I've never done Plato's Closet because I'm sure I'd get SO annoyed. I just drop them off at a local women's shelter instead.

  3. wow, i can't believe they rejected that jacket! it's perfection! glad they rejected it though because now you get to be all gorgeous in it!

i think Platos is such a rip off ... i would rather just donate my clothes to Salvation Army!

    love your outfit, as always!

  4. You look great! I always take my stuff to Plato's a second time before donating it, the stuff that wasn't bought the first time is almost always bought the second time. Their buying is so subjective!

  5. I've never been to Plato's, was actually going to go this weekend, but this makes me think twice.

  6. I've heard not-so-great things about Plato's Closet, similar to what you mentioned! I've always considered checking it out, but after so many negative reviews, I decided to stick with selling my clothes/accessories on eBay. The great thing about eBay is that I feel like I'm actually selling the items for what they are worth! :)

  7. I love shopping at plato's for jeans, because as you mentioned, you can find some high end jeans for dirt cheap, but I learned early its not the place to sell your clothes! They're so picky!!

  8. I like Platos but they are very picky!!

  9. Poor rejected jacket, it's actually really cute! I hate consigning at Plato's and places like that because they only give you a fraction of what your clothes are worth. I'm loving the red sequins layered over the gingham, cute look!

  14. Yeah, Plato's Closet is such a ripoff. We have a local consignment store that gives you 50% of what it ends up selling for in the store, so you end up getting more. But good for you for trying to find new ways to wear things. I usually fail miserably when I attempt such a thing :)

  15. I HATE going to Plato's and Once Upon A Child....I feel like I'm getting so ripped off I'd rather give them away to someone who really needs them. This looks really cute though, maybe a keeper?

  16. Ugh Platos is the worst!

I usually sell my stuff on ebay (or now Poshmark thanks to you), but some pieces are just easier to take to PC!

I think you should def. keep the jacket, supe cute!

  19. I'd bet that I could've taken those 'rejects' off your hands ;) That analogy reminds me of the reject toys on the Christmas Rudolph movie ha. Random thought I know.

That jacket definitely still has some life let in it!

  21. Ugh, I've tried Plato's Closet, too. I only bring stuff there if none of my girlfriends want it of it I couldn't sell it on ebay. TOTAL ripoff - and not only that, but it seems like they only ever want the trashy, cheap clothes! Ha, they have pretty bad taste.

  22. I totally agree about Plato's Closet. They say they only take "in style" clothing but I think they really just pick and chose whatever they want. They wouldn't take some things of mine that were brand spanking new - tags and all! But if you look through their clothes you will find really faded shirts with holes and what not. I don't get it. Plus, they take FOREVER. I used to go there for things that I was just going to toss but honestly, if you take the time to write down what you're giving to the Goodwill (or any other thrift store) you'll make more money by claiming that stuff on your taxes. You might be surprised, but used jeans were going for like $20 a pair!

  23. I've never tried to take my clothes there before. That's odd that they wouldn't take your stuff! I love this look! The jacket looks great. Their loss.

  26. Just discovered your blog this evening thru the Lauren Conrad blog! I am so glad she gave your blog a shout out as I love it!
I HATE Plato's closet. I tried earlier this year selling them barely worn items of mine and they would not a single item! I had a pair of Sevens and Citizen's jeans 2 years old and Nordstrom still selling the styles. Rejected! I was like forget this I will donate them to a womens shelter or goodwill and take the tax write off!
Anyways, I love how you styled your jacket and such beautiful photos! I'm glad to be a new reader!
