Okay, so I have WAYY more than 5 tips for traveling (via airplane)… but these 5 are my go-to rules for how to dress & how to pack! I’m on the go quite a bit – in the month of January alone I was in LA, NYC, & Dallas.. and then the Bahamas right at the beginning of February so I’m always looking for short cuts or ways to trim down packing time. :):):) (like.. if my flight leaves at 8:10 a.m. I usually am packing at 4 am… I’m a really awful procrastinator!!)

Tip #1: (clothing) Wear layers when traveling..
Coming home from the Bahamas I opted for a lightweight chambray since it was much warmer there, but on the way to the Bahamas I wore a cardigan (see that travel post HERE). I usually don’t wear anything heavy just because if you’re running through an airport and get hot (bc yes this happens to me since I’m always late) you don’t have to carry a heavy coat.. and you also have something built in to cover up with in flight.

Tip #2: (clothing) Scarves are your friend..
Depending on the location I am traveling to – or the flight itinerary, I typically take a scarf. For example, when traveling to London in November, I made sure to wear a blanket scarf so that a. I stayed warm b. It’s like a built in blanket or pillow while you are flying! (HERE’s a post on blanket scarves!)
(PS. THIS popular blanket scarf is on sale for $25!)

Tip #3: Stock up on mini-size items..
Anytime I am checking out at Sephora/Nordstrom & see any of my holy grail products in the mini/travel size I always buy it. I do this for a few reasons…
1.) I like leaving them in my travel bag while I am home, that way when I am packing, I just have to throw my travel bag into my luggage and know I haven’t forgotten anything.
2. It weighs less. (bc more room for shoes.. bags.. clothes..!)
3. Also, they are easy to refill. (i.e. the Mac Fix+ spray I use is a pretty big bottle – and I don’t love traveling with it so I purchased THIS size bottle & anytime it runs low I can just transfer some from my larger bottle.
4. Also, if anything spills, breaks, or gets left behind – its just a small version so it’s not as painful/costly as losing the full size version. (I learned this from experience.)

(My Laura Mercier powder, Fix+, DryBar Dry Shampoo, Smashbox Primer, Philosophy face wash (3oz.), etc. are a few I keep packed.)

Tip #4: Bag Bungees
Okay, I got one of THESE a few years ago and STILL use it. It will change your life if you travel more heavily. I always set my purse on top of my carry-on and roll it through the airport but sometimes if I make a sharp turn or take steps I can feel my handbag falling off – if you use THIS it will keep it nice & secure and you won’t lose any contents from your handbag.

Tip #5: Be Organized
I have so many little bags that I like to keep on hand for seperating things.. like I have a small Louis Vuitton pouch (similar by Michael Kors here!) that I always keep in my handbags that has lip colors, chapstick, & pony tail holders. I have a few more little zip pouches that I always use when I’m packing. Like, one for medications that I throw into my carry-on, one for chargers, SD cards, extra cords, etc. (PS. I love these cute, new Tory Burch ones!)

I’m linking several cute pouches in the tool below as well as a lot of the mini/travel products that I love.. there are a ton of things so I’m sharing them in the widget below.
I’d love to hear some of your travel secrets! <3 Also!! I am working on a road trip travel post next.

  1. I noticed you are wearing quite a bit of jewelry. {all of which is super cute btw} Just wondering if you actually wear it all to the airport? I can't imagine trying to go through security and having to remove it all.

  2. Love this post as I'm about to travel. Quick question though, do you put the bag bungee in your suitcase before you check it or in a carry on bag? Can't wait to see more travel tips!

  3. Emily- Do you remember what size you purchased in the Ily Couture Weekend sweatshirt you posted a long time ago. It appears to run really small and I would like it to fit slightly oversized. I am typically an extra small or small. Thank you in advance

  4. Are the Vince Camuto booties true to size? I usually wear a 7.5 and I was wondering if you thought I could size up to an 8 (they are out of stock in the 7.5 in that color)

  5. I love this outfit! great tips! Quick question, i love the lipstick that you are wearing. I bought the lip gloss but what Mac lipstick do you think would be kind of like Beige Tribute ?

  6. Love the bungee idea! Best travel tip I learned from my husband – bring your own airplane bottles (you can bring as many as you'd like because they're under 3oz!). Just stick them in your purse and ask for a full soda and cup of ice!

  7. These are SUCH great tips! I'm traveling every couple weeks from CA to AZ to visit my boyfriend and vice versa, so traveling can be overwhelming packing and unpacking frequently. I love your tip on keeping travel sizes bathroom bag and supplies on hand so you can just throw it in your suitcase and go! Thank you Emily, and I love the chambray top for traveling…it's always my go-to! 🙂

  8. Love this post Emily! Do you have a favorite toiletry bag/cosmetic case? I'm always trying to figure out the best way to keep it all organized while traveling. Would love to see more travel tip posts. Thanks.

  9. How many times have you wished that you could advertise your business in more places, but were dissuaded by the cost of travel? Plane and train tickets can be expensive, and you can never be certain if the time and money would pay off. But when you offer clients travel bags as an incentive, you don't have to do the travelling – the client does it for you. By giving clients travel bags, you reach the eyes of people that you may not have encountered otherwise.
