Resort Review: Excellence Playa Mujeres

I’ve gotten so many e-mails from you all asking for a review over the resort John and I visited a couple of weeks ago, Excellece Playa Mujeres. I don’t think I’ve ever received more messages about a resort/hotel ever! Seems that many of you are planning on honeymooning here form what I understand and it is the perfect place for a honeymoon! This resort is all inclusive and it’s a bit more expensive than some of the others so I can totally understand why you’d want a full out review! In fact, our friends here in Tulsa that are residents with John told us we HAD to go to this resort. Ironically, John had a few vacation days before we moved so John had already googled best resorts in Mexico and this was constantly number one!

TRANSPORTATION
First of all, this is north of Cancun so we flew into the Cancun airport. I had an event in Houston the Saturday before so we got lucky and got a direct flight as soon as the event was over. John wanted me to let you know that he scheduled our vehicle when he booked our room.. this was nice because we didn’t have many fears of anything sketchy happening. They schedule a Suburban to pick you up and drop you off… I loved it because we didn’t have to wait for a taxi AND because the vehicle has FREE WIFI! (Cancun’s airport didn’t have free WIFI and I didn’t want to pay for an international phone plan.)

ROOMS
Also, you can choose different rooms and I think the room we ended up with was my favorite… John wanted to get one of the rooms that was 2 stories but he scheduled it last minute and they were booked up. So we ended up getting a similar room but without 2 stories. It still had it’s own plunge pool and wrap around balcony. This includes two different beds and a table w/chairs. The first floor rooms are pretty cool too… they don’t have the balcony or privacy as much, but they do have a swim up pool outside. The lazy river is right outside of their rooms!

FOOD
I’m pretty introverted so one thing I LOVED about this place was that you can get room service pretty much all day. So I didn’t have to go out and get breakfast or lunch.. almost every AM we had room service brought to the room. Same for lunch. We ate dinner at the restaurants at night. The mexican restaurant is super good! My favorite was the hibachi grill – you have have have to get reservations to eat there though. And you have to do it FIRST thing when you wake up or it will be booked. John liked the italian food place best. I’m a child like eater so I prefer chicken tenders and fries…. :/ Our friends Marwan & Melissa who recommended the place loved the French restaurant but their food did not sound appealing to me but like I said.. kids meals for me!! I am sure most people love that restaurant.

One of my favorite things was the ice cream stand… you can walk by any time during the day and get chocolate or vanilla OR mixed ice cream. You just do it on your own. We got pretty hot in the mornings because we were taking photos and scouting locations so it was a nice treat.

Overall, I didn’t think the food was that great – but John did. And John is picky so that says a lot!

I will say there are bars EVERYWHERE which was something I was happy for because I drink a LOT of Diet Coke and everything is free so I was constantly getting Diet Cokes. 🙂 I don’t like alcohol so it is nice that you can get alcohol free beverages. (I did that at first because they were icy and cold BUT they were sugary so I only got a couple.)

INSIDE OF ROOMS
The rooms are spacious and super nice! Huge closet. Scale. Large shower. We had a jacuzzi on the edge of our balcony too that you could cover for privacy. The only thing I didn’t like about our room was that the bed was SO SO hard! I say that, but I am all about super soft beds so some people may like their beds. 🙂

There is a refrigerator in the room and the maids keep it stocked and it is free. My favorite things in the fridge were the Coca Light, Snickers, and potato chips! They also put Oreos, M&Ms, alcoholic beverages, etc. in there.

POOLS/BEACH
One thing I noticed is that there are LOTS of chairs next to water, whether it be a pool or beach. Most of them have the straw umbrella deal or a cabana like area. You always have the option to be shaded (what I prefer) or be in the sun. The lazy river wraps around the place so it was nice to float around on that, too!

Also, in my photos you may have seen the hammocks over the pools – there are several of those and many people lay in those to read. It did look very relaxing!

ACTIVITIES
There are SO many activities. You can ride jet skis, go parasailing (we did!), attend different parties at night, etc. They have a newsletter with a list of events going on each day. There is plenty to do in case you are the type that needs action! I was blogging most nights so after dinner we would go for a walk around the place and then I’d go blog and John had to study so we didn’t do anything but parasail.

OH! But, there is a spa. I didn’t go to the spa but I did hear it is incredible! You can do couples massages, facials, etc.

OVERALL
My favorite time of day to go to the beach was in the morning during sunrise… it was so quiet and peaceful. Hardly anyone was out there and it was stunning! Would I go back?! Yes! I think it was for sure worth the money! I think one reason I liked it was because of the time of year we went… mid-March. It was one of their slower seasons since it is adults only (mainly couples).  It was a calm, quiet atmosphere and we didn’t ever do much waiting.

Outside of spa

Silly pic from Parasailing!

Snap from our boat ride out to get on the parasailing boat. (My sunglasses, John’s sunglasses.)
The resort is over to the right. (That is fake tan… I used THIS daily.)

John eating the ice cream we loved! (PS. How cute are Johns swim trunks?! They are on sale for $20 right now.)

Gorgeous sunrise..

Coffee at sunrise! (Sandals, Bag, Blanket)

Breakfast on the balcony!

  1. Your bikini and swimsuits are stunning! I would wear all of them. This resort looks incredible. Parasailing is so much fun, I tried it for the first time last September in Turkey and loved it.

  2. We went here for our honeymoon 3 years ago and it was so wonderful, we went back for our babymoo last year. HIGHLY recommend this place. It is AMAZING!

  3. Looks like a beautiful place and it looks like you guys had a lot of fun!! Love all of these photos. Coffee on the beach yes please. I personally drink alcohol (like 1-2 drinks thats about it) but it's nice that they offered alcohol-free beverages. John's swim trunks are really cute too!! I'll have to look into those for my husband since he could use fun ones! Thank you so much for sharing your review/recap too. I'll definitely keep this place in mind for future trips!! Have an amazing weekend!!

  5. I went to this resort back in December for my 25th birthday. Another thing to add is the staff at the resort. Everyone was so friendly. Totally agree with you on the drinks. Way too sugary. Sitting out in the hot sun with too much sugar is a recipe for disaster. The restaurant Chez Isabelle was a personal favorite of ours. Can't say enough good things about this place.

  6. Love! Adding this place to the list 🙂

Side note – would love to know what camera you used for some of the non-outfit post shots. Was it a digital? A DSLR? Your phone? Gorg photos!

  7. My husband and I have been to this resort as well! We had a wonderful time. I agree, the French restaurant was not that great (we did eat there), the Mexican one was great, as well as habachi! We did a couples massage and it was divine! They have plunge pools and salt pools they have you go in after your massage and it's amazing! We can't wait to go back! We went in July and it was not crowded and we had a 2 story room. I highly recommend this resort!

  8. Sign me up! This looks absolutely amazing. My favorite time of day is sunrise too. I never understand why people will sleep in and miss that. Thanks for the thorough review!

  9. I agree the food is nothing that great. The spa however was amazing!! I would go back just for the couples massage alone. The shows at night are also alot of fun!

  11. This looks amazing! My cousin and I are currently planning a trip here. Quick question – was the Parasailing included or was that an extra charge? Thank you!
