Today I’ve teamed up with BaubleBar & Pantene Pro-V to share a little ‘How-To” tutorial. I asked my Facebook fans what tutorial they’d like to see & it seemed like my ‘messy fishtail’ look was most requested (thanks, Brittany) so here we are… (Sidenote: if you want to pin this tutorial – here’s an easy collage to re-pin so you can save it on your board!)
You’ll need elastics, bobby pins, a teasing comb and/or brush. I also used this Styling Gel!
Step 1. Make sure you are wearing pretty baubles… I will be wearing these turquoise tassel earrings from BaubleBar. (I can’t get enough of them!)
Okay, the real Step 1. Make sure your hair is tangle free… or as tangle free as you can get it. I always use this teasing brush. Also, I am a sucker for volume so I always tease my hair quite a bit before I start the braiding process!
Step 2. Begin your fishtail. If you don’t know how to fishtail – here’s a quick video. Before I start my fishtail, I put this Pantene Styling Gel in both hands and then began the braid so that each section was picking up a little gel to control the stray hairs!
Continue braiding… if you notice that the ends are getting tangled and forming a braid of it’s own you’ll need to brush through the ends.
I always have to stop half-way through the fishtail braid & brush through to make sure there are no tangles otherwise the braid may not come together as neatly.
Once you are towards the end of the braid it should look something like this. It will probably look better! My hair has some really short layers so I definitely think most people will have better luck.
Step 3. Secure the end of the braid with an elastic. I recommend using an elastic over a ponytail holder.. it will be much more effective! 🙂
Step 4. After securing the end with an elastic, separate into two and pull the braid apart. This more or less “squishes” the braid up and makes it have a chunkier look. You can always stop here, by the way!
Step 5. Use your fingers and pull apart the braid. I do this to make it puffier. It makes it have a more effortless look as opposed to a clean, neat braid.
Step 6. Finally, use bobby pins to secure any loose pieces that may have come out during the braid. I have lots of loose pieces and they are thicker, so I use a larger bobby pin on those!
