As many of you know, I partnered with TRESemmé during MBFW & had the privilege of not only attending several shows, but also going backstage of the Marissa Webb show. During the shows I attended, I took note of the different hair styles I saw & loved.. If you’ve read my blog in the past couple of weeks, you’ve seen I’ve been sporting straight locks (as opposed to my usual curl!). This is something I don’t do often, but I was so inspired by the BCBG & Monique Lhullier shows where the models had board straight hair that moved so perfectly with their garments. In addition to that, I was also inspired by the unique hairstyle Jeannie Syfu (TRESemmé’s lead stylist for the Marissa Webb show) did on models. (I will attach photos below!) The look was a faux-mohawk with the sides of the head in french braids. It was unlike anything I had seen before & made a statement in & of itself. Anyway, I came home from New York & I was bound & determined to learn how to french braid so I could re-create the model’s style. I wanted to make it more of an everyday look – as opposed to a runway/fashion week look. Truth be told, I couldn’t master the french/dutch braid, but I instead went with the following braid (seen on my Insta HERE last week). It is inverted (like a dutch braid is) & is super, super easy! Here’s a little step-by-step..
PS. There is a YOU TUBE VIDEO ON THIS HAIR STYLE NOW VIEW IT HERE.
PS. my dress is HERE! I love THIS curling iron!
STEPS 1/2: Use the TRESemmé Heat Tamer Spray before you put any heat on it. I SWEAR by this stuff – not only on my hair but my extensions, too. (I am not wearing extensions in this post.) After generously spraying the Heat Tamer, I used a 1.25 inch curling iron to give my hair some curl.
STEPS 3/4/5: My hair was a little dirty so I used the TRESemmé Dry Shampoo to soak up the oils & give it a little more texture. (Sidenote: I recommend the TRESemmé 24-Hour Body Mousse for giving texture as well.) Next, I used a teasing comb to create some volume & then locked in the tease with my favorite TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray..
STEP 6: I did a side part with one braid to the side. However, you could do a middle part & then do 2 separate braids down both sides (I actually will probably do it this way soon!). Anyway, start by grabbing a chunk of hair next to the part & splitting it into 3 even sections. Next, braid like a normal braid. The inverted braid is created by crossing the side pieces UNDER as opposed to crossing them OVER the middle. The inverted braid is what makes this look pop though! The other difference with this braid is that you don’t grab hair from each side as you go down your hair. Instead, you only grab pieces that are close to your face. Once you pass your ear with this braid, you just continue braiding like normal without adding in pieces of hair.
STEPS 7/8/9: After I finish the braid, I use two large bobby pins to secure the braid on the back of my head. Next, I pull the sides of the braid out & try to make it ‘puffy’. 🙂 Secure the braid by spraying a generous about of the TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hair spray.
STEP 10: Finally, I used the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth to smooth away any flyways & soften the curls. (and it adds some extra shine!)
Here are few closer-up photos of the hairstyle from the Marissa Webb show.. I love the volume in the faux-mohawk & how the braids all come together in the back (some models had 5 strand braids, etc.). The hairstyle went flawlessly with the SS15 looks. Each of the looks was very feminine but had a touch of masculinity which you’ll find is much like the hairstyles below. I really hope I can master this. I'm okay at french braiding but have never mastered the difficult dutch braid. This might be a good practice though!
My other worry is that my hair is super thin so my braids never pop as much as I would like them to.
